Birmingham Drivers Face New 30mph Speed Limits and Fines on Key Routes

Drivers in Birmingham are being urged to stay alert to new 30mph speed limits introduced on over two dozen of the city’s busiest roads. This is part of Birmingham City Council’s ongoing efforts to improve road safety following the declaration of a road safety emergency.

From the beginning of this year, roads including major routes like the A34 Walsall Road, A38 Bristol Road South, and A456 Hagley Road West now have reduced speed limits of 30mph. New signage has been installed citywide to clearly indicate these updated limits. Authorities emphasize that 30mph is now the maximum speed permitted on nearly all roads across Birmingham, replacing previous higher limits that drivers may have expected, especially on wider or busier routes.

Motorists caught exceeding these new limits face increased risk of fines and enforcement measures. To support compliance, new speed cameras have been activated and police are conducting targeted speed operations along these key corridors.

Cllr Majid Mahmood, Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport at Birmingham City Council, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating: “When we declared a road safety emergency, we promised to take action, and this is what is happening. Our message here is simple: Slower is safer. Stick to speed limits and save lives.”

Drivers are encouraged to stay informed about these changes and adjust their driving accordingly to help create safer roads for everyone in Birmingham.
