Alum Rock Road in Birmingham has earned a reputation as one of the city’s most challenging areas for parking—and the numbers this year only reinforce that status. Since the start of 2024, traffic wardens have issued nearly 5,000 penalty charge notices (PCNs) on this busy street alone.
According to freedom of information data, 4,744 fines were handed out in just the first five months—averaging around 1,000 each month. If this trend continues, Alum Rock Road is set to exceed 10,000 fines by year-end.
The road’s parking difficulties stem from a range of violations, including ignoring double yellow lines, overstaying parking limits, failing to pay, and even parking on pavements. Such behaviors not only disrupt traffic flow but also obstruct pedestrians, shoppers, and residents trying to navigate the area.

Despite these problems, Alum Rock Road isn’t the worst offender. Stratford Road, cutting through Sparkhill and Sparkbrook, tops the list with nearly 8,000 parking fines issued—and has long been a hotspot for chronic parking violations.
Other roads with high fine counts include Washwood Heath Road (1,311), Gas Street (1,202), and Cornwall Street (1,114). Each of these thoroughfares sees heavy traffic and parking pressures, contributing to the ongoing challenges for Birmingham drivers.
With the city’s busiest roads continuing to attract significant parking enforcement, motorists are urged to be mindful of restrictions and regulations to avoid fines and help ease congestion in these heavily trafficked areas.
