Drivers in Birmingham are being urged to take note of newly reduced speed limits on several key roads throughout the city. The speed limit on many of the busiest routes has been lowered to 30mph as part of a city-wide road safety initiative.
Thousands of motorists may face fines for exceeding these limits, even if driving just 1mph over the threshold. Although police sometimes show leniency for minor breaches like 31mph, speeds of 35mph and above are more likely to result in penalties.
The city council has increased the number of average speed cameras to support enforcement efforts, accompanied by expected targeted police patrols. These measures come as part of Birmingham’s commitment to reducing road accidents and enhancing public safety.

Cllr Majid Mahmood, cabinet member for environment and transport, emphasized the importance of the new rules, stating: “When we declared a road safety emergency we promised to take action and this is what is happening. There is no excuse for dangerous driving. We are installing these cameras to stop those drivers who think it is acceptable to put people at risk by travelling too fast. Our message here is simple: Slower is Safer. Stick to speed limits and save lives.”
Motorists are advised to watch for updated signage and adjust their driving habits to avoid fines and ensure the safety of all road users.
