Speed limits have recently been lowered significantly across many parts of Birmingham, with the majority of busy roads now reduced from 40mph to 30mph. This change aims to improve road safety and reduce the number of collisions within the city.
Motorists who frequently travel through Birmingham for work, shopping, or school runs are likely to have noticed these changes. However, those unaware or inattentive to the new speed limit signs face the risk of fines if they exceed the 30mph limit, even by a small margin.
Key thoroughfares affected include parts of the A34 Walsall Road, A38 Bristol Road South, and A456 Hagley Road West, among others. In addition to the lowered speed limits, Birmingham City Council is introducing new speed cameras across the city to monitor compliance.

Council officials are also seeking to address pavement parking concerns alongside these traffic measures.
Although police may occasionally show leniency for minor infractions, such as travelling at 31mph in a 30mph zone, this is not guaranteed, and drivers should not rely on discretion.
A recent investigation by BirminghamLive revealed that police speed camera vans are actively monitoring these newly designated 30mph roads, signalling heightened enforcement.
Cllr Majid Mahmood, former roads boss at Birmingham City Council, emphasised earlier this year the council’s commitment to road safety: “When we declared a road safety emergency, we promised to take action and this is what is happening.” He added, “Our message here is simple: Slower is Safer. Stick to speed limits and save lives.”
