Birmingham councillor warns residents against fly-tipping at clothing banks

An independent councillor in Birmingham has issued a strong warning to residents following concerning behaviour at a local clothing donation bank.

Sam Forsyth, who represents the Quinton area, appealed to the public to refrain from fly-tipping and damaging donation bins after sharing photographs on social media showing a man attempting to force items into an already full clothing bank on Quinton Road West.

The images revealed the individual pulling at the clothing bank’s handles while balancing on one foot, apparently trying to cram more items inside. In addition to the risk of damaging the bins, the photos showed a pile of discarded rubbish beneath the donation point, including filled black bin bags and even a toilet.

Clothing banks are intended to provide residents with a convenient way to donate unused clothes and shoes. However, leaving items outside the bins or forcing them in when full constitutes fly-tipping, which is both illegal and harmful to the community.

In a Facebook post dated Monday, 17 August, Councillor Forsyth reminded residents: “If the clothing banks are full on QRW, please don’t try and break them to ram your stuff in. Take your stuff home and don’t fly-tip it, thank you.”

Her message underscores the importance of responsible disposal and care for community amenities in Quinton and the wider Birmingham area.
