Plans to demolish and replace the existing Welsh House Farm Junior and Infant School in Quinton, Birmingham, are recommended for approval by the city council.
The redevelopment proposal includes the construction of a new two-storey primary school building designed to accommodate 248 pupils, alongside a nursery and a specialist SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) unit.
In addition to the new building, the project features a redesigned car parking area, all-weather play spaces, landscaping enhancements, and improved amenity areas to support the school’s functions.

A recent report by a Birmingham Council officer details that the redevelopment aims to enhance educational facilities and provide better outdoor play and recreational opportunities for students.
Although the proposal involves the removal of several existing trees and introduces a larger building footprint, these impacts are described as limited and manageable through appropriate mitigation measures.
The report concludes that the educational, social, and environmental benefits offered by the new school outweigh the minor adverse effects caused by construction and site changes.
Furthermore, the development is deemed unlikely to harm the local visual character, neighbouring residents' quality of life, traffic conditions, ecology, or lead to increased flood risks.
The planning committee is scheduled to discuss and potentially approve the redevelopment at their meeting on Thursday, 10 September.
Inside the proposed new building, the ground floor would house a main entrance, a centrally located assembly hall, nursery and reception areas, and specialist SEND facilities including therapy rooms. The first floor would contain four junior classrooms, two infant classrooms, a staff room, and the headteacher’s office.
This redevelopment is poised to modernise the school’s infrastructure significantly, thus enhancing the learning environment for the local community’s children.
