Birmingham City Council has revealed ambitious plans to transform Erdington town centre over the next 20 years, aiming to breathe new life into a high street that has faced challenges in recent times.
The council’s Local Plan, a comprehensive strategy intended to shape Birmingham’s future development, highlights key opportunities for economic growth, housing, and investment in the area.
Specifically, the vision for Erdington town centre emphasises creating a “destination of choice” by enhancing shop frontages, fostering a vibrant mixed-use environment, and celebrating the area’s historic buildings.

Acknowledging that the high street has “declined in recent years,” the council expresses optimism about its potential. Plans include new public spaces that promote walkability and offer a strong sense of place, alongside a balanced mix of homes, businesses, leisure, and wellbeing services centred within the area.
A focal point of the regeneration is the proposal for a new public space at the heart of the high street. This development aims to boost the quality and identity of Erdington, while improving access for pedestrians and cyclists.
The high street has previously suffered from concerns regarding anti-social behaviour and crime, prompting West Midlands Police to launch Operation Fearless last year. This initiative, funded with £880,000 from Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Foster using seized criminal assets, has played a significant role in reducing crime and enhancing public safety. Residents have reported feeling significantly safer thanks to a heightened police presence and enforcement.
The council’s ongoing vision for Erdington town centre also includes further improvements to public amenities and services, supporting the area’s evolution into a welcoming and vibrant community hub.
