Birmingham Council Introduces Fines for Traffic Offences as New Cameras Are Installed

Birmingham City Council is set to enforce new traffic regulations in targeted areas, placing motorists at risk of fines for rule violations. As part of a comprehensive road safety campaign, cameras will be installed at key locations where illegal driving maneuvers, particularly banned turns, have been a persistent problem.

The enforcement program is scheduled to launch later this year. Initially, drivers caught committing offences will receive warning notices, giving them time to adjust their behavior before financial penalties are imposed. New signage and road markings will be put in place prior to the cameras going live to help motorists comply with the rules.

This crackdown complements other road safety measures already underway in Birmingham, including the installation of average speed cameras along busy routes and the reduction of speed limits on major roads to 30 mph.

Councillor Majid Mahmood, the city’s transport chief, emphasized the focus on education during enforcement: “These new powers will help to make our roads safer by reducing dangerous driving behaviours like making banned turns and ignoring no-entry signs. It will also allow for more effective local control over traffic flow and safety. When enforcement action does begin, our focus will be on education. New signage and road markings give motorists the opportunity to adjust their behaviour. We may also issue valid PCNs with no fine payable initially.”

This initiative reflects Birmingham’s ongoing commitment to enhancing road safety for all residents and commuters.
