Birmingham Council Ends Contract with Care Home Operator Over Safety Concerns

Birmingham City Council has terminated its contract with Trust Quality Care, the operator of Rosemary Lodge care home in Kings Heath, due to serious safety concerns. The decision comes after a thorough review highlighted issues related to governance, leadership, quality assurance, risk management, record keeping, and compliance with contractual requirements at the Alcester Road South facility.

The closure of Rosemary Lodge, expected next month, affects more than a dozen elderly residents, some of whom lack family support and face health challenges. The council has assured that it is actively supporting all residents to secure alternative care arrangements, prioritising their safety, well-being, and individual needs throughout the transition.

In response to the announcement, a petition has been launched to save Rosemary Lodge, with supporters describing the home as a sanctuary and community for its residents, offering stability and comfort beyond just accommodation. Staff members have expressed concern over the impact the closure will have on residents, noting the distress caused by the news.

A council spokesperson commented: “The decision to terminate the contract followed a comprehensive review uncovering significant concerns about the care home’s operation and management. We remain focused on the safety and long-term interests of the residents.

“We understand this is a difficult time for residents and their families. We are working closely with them, as well as health partners and social care professionals, to manage the transition sensitively and according to each individual’s circumstances. Family engagement sessions have been held to provide information and support.

“Throughout this period, residents will continue to receive care, with every effort made to reduce disruption during their move to new accommodation. Given the sensitive nature of this situation and the involvement of vulnerable individuals, we cannot comment on individual cases at this stage.”
