Birmingham cleaner launches eco-friendly cleaning products inspired by her grandmother’s rituals

Alisha Wilson, with nearly a decade of experience as a professional cleaner, has launched her own range of eco-conscious cleaning products inspired by the meticulous cleaning habits of her Jamaican grandmother.

Running The Clean Freaks of Birmingham, Alisha, 44, was motivated to create a better alternative after noticing the large number of empty plastic bottles filled with harsh chemicals she and her team used. Concerned about the potential impact of these chemicals on their health, particularly hormonal effects, she sought a safer, more sustainable solution.

“Owning a cleaning company, I have tried every cleaning product imaginable,” said Alisha, a single mother of three from Bewdley. “I always felt something was missing-products either smelled great but didn’t clean well or cleaned well but contained harsh chemicals. I wanted to create the ‘unicorn’ of cleaning products: something that looks beautiful, smells divine, is refillable, and always gets the job done.”

Inspired by her grandmother Enid Pearl Nethersol, whose Tyseley home was impeccably maintained, Alisha launched Pearl & Sol in July 2026. The plant-based product line includes an antibacterial multi-surface cleaner suitable for any surface, a floor cleaner safe for all floor types including natural wood, and a room fragrance designed to freshen fabrics after cleaning.

These products come in refillable amber glass bottles, designed for postal delivery and reuse, aligning with a sustainable ethos.

Alisha views cleaning not just as a chore but as a ritual-a philosophy passed down by her grandmother. “Cleaning is inevitable, so I try to make it a calm, enjoyable experience by lighting a candle, opening the windows, and playing music,” she explained. “As a child, it was my job to clean the ‘best room’ in my gran’s house with patience and attention to detail. We’d often dance and sing as we worked, and I still encourage my team to do the same, always with the clients' permission.”

Before turning to cleaning full-time, Alisha worked as a finance director for 21 years but struggled to balance work with family life, leading her to take a break. A friend’s encouragement to pursue cleaning professionally has led her to build a thriving business with a loyal client base across Quinton, Harborne, Bearwood, Oldbury, and Halesowen.

The Clean Freaks are known for their thorough approach, going beyond surface cleaning, which has created a waiting list of around 140 clients.

Alisha and her team have experienced positive health benefits since switching to her plant-based range, noting a reduction in allergy symptoms and improved wellbeing.

Pearl & Sol’s refillable bottles, featuring classic amber glass and gold accents, stand out in the market. At 500ml, they are larger than many competitors and come ready to use, removing the inconvenience of mixing concentrates.

Since its launch, Pearl & Sol has received a warm reception, with increasing demand for refills. Alisha remains committed to personal service, offering phone support for customers and avoiding subscription models.
