Birmingham City’s Summer Transfer Window: Bigger and Busier Than Expected

Birmingham City have signed an astonishing 38 players across the last four transfer windows, and the summer of 2024 looks set to continue this trend—regardless of whether Chris Davies remains the manager.

Davies’ future is under intense scrutiny after the club missed preseason expectations of mounting a serious promotion challenge to the Premier League. Alongside managerial uncertainty, there are significant questions surrounding the playing squad’s composition.

Currently, Blues rely on four loan players, all of whom could return to their parent clubs once the summer window opens. Goalkeeper James Beadle and Ghanaian winger Ibrahim Osman will head back to Brighton & Hove Albion, while deals for Tommy Doyle and Jhon Solis hinged on promotion—an outcome now out of reach. Doyle is expected to return to Wolverhampton Wanderers, but there remains a possibility Birmingham might pursue a permanent move for Solis. The 21-year-old Girona loanee has gained valuable Championship experience this season, demonstrating the physicality and ball-winning skills Blues lacked earlier in the campaign, making him a fan favorite for a permanent deal.

With these likely departures in mind, Blues immediately face the need to recruit a goalkeeper—ideally an experienced, undisputed first-choice—alongside two midfielders and a winger. Defensive reinforcements are also a priority: a left-sided center-back should top the club’s wish list after a season marked by instability in defense.

In January, Blues targeted Brentford defender Ethan Pinnock for this role. Pinnock, who will be 33 at the start of next season, would bring much-needed Championship experience. Additionally, the right-back position requires urgent attention to provide competition for Ethan Laird, especially given that Bright Osayi-Samuel failed to deliver consistent performances.

Fortunately, Birmingham is well-stocked in attacking areas, particularly out wide. Players like Patrick Roberts (four goals, five assists), Demarai Gray (five goals, four assists), and Carlos Vicente have proven valuable Championship contributors. Adding another left-winger would round out this strong cohort.

While Jay Stansfield and August Priske are expected to remain, Kyogo Furuhashi is anticipated to move on, and Marvin Ducksch’s future is uncertain. Rumors suggest the 32-year-old striker could depart after his first season in England.

Replacing Ducksch and Kyogo will be essential, but so too will be signing a natural number 10—the creative playmaker capable of unlocking tight defenses. This has been a missing piece for Blues this season, forcing Davies to rely on forwards like Ducksch and Stansfield to fill the gap despite their lack of specialized creativity.

Comparisons can be drawn with other clubs: Coventry’s Jack Rudoni, Middlesbrough’s Riley McGree, Ipswich’s Anis Mehmeti, and Southampton’s Finn Azaz all provide goals, assists, and excellent possession skills from that pivotal number 10 position.

All signs point to another hectic summer transfer window for Birmingham City as they seek to build a squad capable of challenging for promotion once again.
