Birmingham City heads into this summer’s transfer window with one clear objective: perfection. After finishing 10th in the Championship—a solid foundation—the club knows that to climb higher and secure at least a play-off spot next season, their recruitment strategy must be spot on.
The Championship will be fiercely competitive, with strong contenders like relegated Premier League sides West Ham, Burnley, and Wolves, alongside Southampton and Middlesbrough. There are no easy paths, and Birmingham City must build a squad capable of competing at the highest level within the league.
So far, Blues have secured the permanent signing of Colombian winger Jhon Solis, who impressed on loan from Girona. However, this is just the beginning. Manager Chris Davies has hinted at making around six further signings, excluding Solis and the priority re-signing of forward Ibrahim Osman.

Osman’s return, however, is complicated. Signed by Brighton for a reported £16 million two years ago, Osman offers undeniable talent but lacks a purchase option in his loan deal with Blues. Nevertheless, the positive relationship between the two clubs and Osman’s desire to return might tip the scales in Birmingham’s favor. The 21-year-old’s international experience across Denmark, the Netherlands, and France also adds valuable depth to the squad.
Beyond Osman and Solis, Blues urgently need reinforcements across several key positions: a goalkeeper, an additional center-back, midfield creativity, a number 10, and one or two strikers.
The goalkeeper market is particularly intriguing. Birmingham should consider proven options like James Beadle (a familiar face after his loan), Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson, Illan Meslier (recently a free agent), and notably Radek Vitek. The 22-year-old Czech goalie, named Bristol City’s Player of the Year on loan, is attracting interest from several Championship clubs. If Blues can secure Vitek from Manchester United, it would be a strategic coup for long-term stability between the posts.
In defense, the club will likely build on the partnership between Phil Neumann and Christoph Klarer. However, adding a left-footed center-back could provide greater tactical flexibility and help Klarer move to his preferred right-sided role.
Midfield reinforcements are equally crucial. Solis will complement key players Paik Seung-ho, who faces a needed shoulder operation, and Tomoki Iwata. Yet, Blues lack a creative number 10 to drive the attack, as Kanya Fujimoto and Willum Willumsson failed to convince manager Davies last season. This position demands a player who can inject creativity and unlock resolute Championship defenses.
Most importantly, Birmingham’s promotion ambitions hinge on their attacking prowess. While their defense proved solid last season, scoring was a clear weakness—they were the lowest scorers among the top ten teams. Kyogo Furuhashi’s missed chances underline the need for new striking options. With Marvin Ducksch expected to leave, acquiring one or possibly two reliable goal-scorers becomes a priority.
Experience in the Championship is key when signing strikers. The majority of last season’s top scorers had prior league experience—like Portsmouth’s Adrian Segecic, who netted 11 goals in his first season, or Ducksch himself, who scored 10 in his debut year at this level.
Candidates like Ross Stewart and Josh Maja are available on free transfers, but both come with concerns—injury history and form. Still, Blues need someone who can consistently contribute 10 to 15 goals a season to give them a real shot.
This transfer window will define Birmingham City’s season. By the close of the window on September 1, every signing must be made and every box ticked to mount a serious promotion challenge. The club and its fans are counting on a flawless transfer strategy—and the right blend of talent—to turn their Championship dream into reality.
