Birmingham City remains hopeful about re-signing Ibrahim Osman, who impressed during his loan spell last season. The Ghanaian forward scored twice in 18 appearances and quickly became a fan favorite. Manager Chris Davies expressed interest in securing Osman’s return as the club navigates its transfer plans for the upcoming season.
Discussions between Birmingham City and Osman’s parent club, Brighton & Hove Albion, have continued since the season ended. While Brighton appears open to selling, the two clubs currently differ significantly in their valuation of the player.
Financial restrictions loom large for Birmingham City this summer. The club is carefully managing its budget to comply with the Championship’s Squad Cost Ratio (SCR) rules, which limit spending on the squad to 85% of the club’s revenue. In recent years, Birmingham has pushed the envelope with heavy investment: they spent over £25 million in 2024 alone to bring in 17 new players, many of whom have since departed. Last year, while transfer fees were lower, substantial contracts were agreed upon.

Birmingham has already committed £6 million to make Jhon Solis’s loan from Girona permanent and spent £15 million on January signings Carlos Vicente, August Priske, and Kai Wagner. These outlays have tightened the club’s financial flexibility, forcing a more cautious approach in the current transfer window.
Manager Chris Davies has candidly acknowledged that the club is targeting low-cost deals, especially for key positions like goalkeeper. BirminghamLive recently reported ongoing talks to re-sign James Beadle on loan from Brighton as part of this strategy.
Davies outlined the club’s approach: “Last summer, it was ten-plus signings; this summer, I’m thinking five but with quality and measured additions. That’s a challenge because we don’t have an open chequebook. We have a budget with restraints and must be creative in a highly competitive market.”
In addition to the goalkeeper and a potential left-winger signing, the club is reviewing options in midfield and attack but currently feels well-stocked in those areas. Taylor Gardner-Hickman, for example, has impressed in pre-season and remains one of four senior central midfielders in the squad.
While there’s been some openness to offers for striker Kyogo Furuhashi, he made a strong pre-season start with two goals against Huddersfield Town. Meanwhile, Marvin Ducksch is seeking a move away, and Birmingham would gain financial breathing room if they can sell him and remove the last two years of his contract from their books.
As the transfer window unfolds, Birmingham City faces the challenge of balancing ambition with fiscal responsibility, aiming to strengthen their squad without overspending.
