Birmingham City endured their heaviest home loss in nearly 12 years as they were comprehensively beaten 6-1 by Premier League side Brentford in the Carabao Cup second-round tie at St Andrew’s.
Chris Davies’ side struggled to contain a swift and clinical Brentford team, who scored three goals in each half to secure an emphatic victory. The Blues offered little resistance throughout the match against a well-drilled opposition.
Nathan Collins was the standout player for Brentford, scoring twice either side of the interval. He was joined on the scoresheet before half-time by Aaron Hickey and Callum Wilson, who notably scored for Bournemouth during their 8-0 defeat against Birmingham in 2014.

In the second half, Mikkel Damsgaard and Igor Thiago added to Brentford’s tally before Collins sealed the 6-1 win with a late goal. Birmingham now face a quick turnaround ahead of their trip to Wrexham on Friday night.
Manager Keith Andrews made eight changes from the side that secured a convincing victory over Tottenham just days earlier. Nonetheless, Brentford did not miss a beat and took the lead inside six minutes through Wilson, who capitalised on a defensive lapse.
Birmingham briefly levelled at 1-1 just before the half-hour mark when Luis Vazquez dispossessed Jannik Schuster and was brought down. Paik Seung-ho’s free kick found Dan Crowley, who struck a low, powerful shot past the Brentford goalkeeper.
However, Brentford quickly restored their lead with two goals from set-piece throw-in routines on the Blues’ left flank. Hickey smashed in a cross following a loose ball, and Collins headed home a precise delivery from Jaidon Anthony to leave Brentford 3-1 up at halftime.
The visitors extended their advantage in the second half, with Damsgaard scoring following a counter-attack and Thiago tapping in a cross from Anthony. Collins added his second goal from a corner to complete the scoring.
Player ratings reflected the difficult evening for Birmingham, with many players receiving low marks. Goalkeeper Ryan Allsop was rated 4, unable to prevent the onslaught. Aaron Hickey and Jannik Klarer struggled against their opponents, also rated 4 and 4.5 respectively.
Dan Crowley and Jorge Vicente showed some fight but were ultimately overrun. Fujimoto was substituted after an hour following a quiet performance rated 3.
In contrast, Dan Crowley was one of the few bright sparks with a rating of 6, demonstrating relative composure amid a difficult contest.
Brentford’s consistent pressure and superior quality were evident throughout the match, leaving Birmingham facing a tough challenge in their upcoming fixtures.
