Birmingham City Sanction 11th Transfer Exit Ahead of Deadline Day

Birmingham City have confirmed the departure of Iceland international Willum Willumsson, who has transferred to NEC Nijmegen for an undisclosed fee on the penultimate day of the transfer window.

The 27-year-old midfielder was notably absent from Blues' squad during their 2-0 win over Oxford United on Saturday as his move back to the Netherlands was finalized.

Willumsson joined Birmingham City in the 2024 summer transfer window from Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles, a signing that initially grabbed attention. However, since the club’s promotion to the Championship, he struggled to secure a consistent place in Chris Davies’ starting lineup.

With NEC Nijmegen currently sitting fourth in the Eredivisie, the Dutch club provides Willumsson an opportunity to reinvigorate his career on home soil. Birmingham City, meanwhile, have continued to reshape their squad, with Willumsson becoming the 11th player to leave since the summer transfer window began.

From the 17 players signed in summer 2024, only six remain at the club as Blues streamline their squad. Notably, Birmingham City are unlikely to bring in a direct replacement for Willumsson, instead looking to Kanya Fujimoto, who has had limited Championship exposure with just two brief appearances, to support forwards Marvin Ducksch and Jay Stansfield.

During his time with Birmingham, Willumsson contributed seven goals in 60 appearances. His departure underscores the ongoing transition within the squad as the club focuses on consolidating its Championship status with a more defined core group.
