Birmingham City Miss Out on Crucial Win as West Brom Hold Them to Goalless Draw

Birmingham City squandered the opportunity to climb into the Championship’s top six after being held to a 0-0 stalemate by West Bromwich Albion in a fiercely contested derby.

The match was a tale of near misses and fine margins for the Blues, who dominated possession and created several chances but couldn’t find the back of the net. August Priske’s stoppage-time header appeared to secure a dramatic winner until it was disallowed due to an offside ruling involving substitute Demarai Gray, leaving the home side frustrated.

From the outset, Birmingham controlled the game, especially in the opening 15 minutes. A well-rehearsed set-piece saw Kai Wagner deliver a precise cross to Paik Seung-ho, who headed powerfully towards goal. However, Callum Styles' intervention on the line prevented the ball from crossing into the net. Replays later revealed Styles handled the ball on the goal-line, but the referee, lacking the benefit of video assistance, did not award a penalty.

Compounding their woes, Birmingham lost the influential Paik to a shoulder injury shortly afterward, forcing Tommy Doyle into action. Bright Osayi-Samuel, making his first start for two months, showed bursts of pace and linked well with winger Patrick Roberts, who created multiple opportunities. Despite their attacking intent, the Blues were repeatedly denied by a resolute West Brom defense, with goalkeeper Max O’Leary producing several crucial saves, including a smart block against Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba late in the first half.

Manager Chris Davies made three substitutions around the hour mark, bringing on Tomoki Iwata, Carlos Vicente, and Priske to sharpen Birmingham’s attacking edge. Vicente quickly made an impact by winning a corner out of nothing, and Osman’s close-range effort was superbly cleared off the line by Charlie Taylor, ensuring West Brom held firm.

Osman continued to be a key threat, but his volleys flew over the bar, denying Blues the breakthrough they desperately sought. Just as the game seemed destined for a goalless finish, Priske’s header sparked jubilant celebrations among the home fans—only for the offside flag to extinguish their hopes.

The stalemate leaves Birmingham City one point shy of the play-offs, while West Brom inches further away from the relegation zone with a valuable point.
