Newly promoted Hull City faces a pressing financial challenge, needing to raise £6 million before June 30 to comply with EFL regulations. The Tigers risk a six-point deduction if they fail to meet this deadline, prompting the club to consider player sales.
Owner Acun Ilicali openly acknowledged the situation during a Q&A session at the MKM Stadium, stating, “We have overspent and must sell some players before 1 July. I’m not afraid. We’ve managed tougher situations. Now, as a Premier League team, player values have increased, which is an advantage.”
This financial urgency has caught the attention of Championship rivals like Birmingham City, who see an opportunity to acquire seasoned players at potentially reduced costs. Hull’s recent success, including a play-off victory against Middlesbrough at Wembley, has highlighted the importance of Championship experience—a quality Birmingham and others are eager to bolster.

Ilicali aims to protect key talents like David Akintola, Kasey Palmer, Abdus Omur, Abu Kamara, and Mason Burstow, but the looming deadline leaves his options limited. Forward Kyle Joseph, noted for eight league goals and four assists last season, is reportedly attracting a £5 million offer from Millwall.
Additionally, goalkeeper Ivor Pandur and left-back Ryan Giles are drawing interest domestically and internationally. Pandur, 26, played a pivotal role with 11 clean sheets in the regular season and three more during the play-offs, helping secure Hull’s promotion. Giles, the team’s key creator from the left flank with eight assists, is strongly linked with a move to Norwich City.
As Hull City navigates this financial crunch, Championship clubs like Birmingham City have a unique chance to strengthen their squads by targeting experienced players eager for new challenges.
