Birmingham City Council Election 2026: Complete List of Candidates Announced

The full roster of candidates contesting the Birmingham City Council election scheduled for May 7, 2026, has been officially released, laying the groundwork for what promises to be a uniquely competitive local election.

Labour has held sway over Birmingham City Council since 2012, securing a majority with 65 of 101 seats in the 2022 election. Currently, Labour holds 52 seats, with opposition distributed among Conservatives (22), Liberal Democrats (13), Greens (2), independents (10), and two seats vacant. With 51 seats required for majority control, the race is set to be closely fought.

Historically, Birmingham’s council has experienced shifts between Labour dominance, Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalitions, and outright Conservative control. However, national trends since the 2024 General Election indicate rising support for Reform UK and the Green Party, contributing to a fragmented electoral landscape.

This election will see five main parties — Labour, Conservatives, Liberal Democrats, Greens, and Reform UK — fielding candidates for all 101 council seats across 69 wards. Additionally, a number of independents, including several advocating pro-Palestine platforms, further diversify the candidate pool.

Certain wards feature as many as 14 candidates vying for two council seats, underscoring the intensity of competition. In total, more than 600 individuals are seeking election, demonstrating strong democratic engagement at the local level.

The election results will be announced on May 8 at the Utilita Arena (formerly the National Indoor Arena) near Brindleyplace, following the ballot count held on the same day.

The candidate list spans all wards with participants representing a broad spectrum of political perspectives and affiliations, including Labour, Conservative, Liberal Democrat, Green Party, Reform UK, Workers Party, Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition, and numerous independent candidates.

Birmingham voters are encouraged to engage with candidate platforms and make informed choices in an election that could reshape local governance and influence the city’s future direction.
