Birmingham City Centre Public Realm Upgrade to Begin Early Next Year

Extensive public realm improvements are set to commence in Birmingham city centre early next year, marking the start of a two-year project aimed at enhancing the urban environment for residents, visitors, and businesses alike.

Contracted by Birmingham City Council, CPC Civils will lead the installation of new granite paving, upgraded lighting, improved drainage systems, and modern street furniture across six carefully planned phases. The improvements will span major areas including New Street, Bennetts Hill, Ethel Street, Temple Street, Lower Temple Street, Eden Place, and Chamberlain Passage.

The initial phase, beginning on January 5, will concentrate on the steps at Victoria Square and adjacent sections of New Street and Temple Street. Specifically, work on New Street will take place between Nando’s and KFC as well as between Apple’s flagship store and Watches of Switzerland. Temple Street improvements will cover the stretch from Fumo to Flight Club.

To ensure smooth communication, CPC Civils has established a dedicated hub at 70 New Street, next to Medicine Café. Here, the Public Liaison Officer, Peace, will be available to address any business concerns during the construction period. Additionally, weekly drop-in sessions will be held every Wednesday at the site.

Birmingham City Council emphasizes that the enhancements aim to create safer, more attractive pedestrian zones that benefit cyclists, residents, visitors, and commercial entities. By restricting vehicle access, the project also seeks to contribute to long-term air quality improvements in the city centre.

Central BID will be providing ongoing support to businesses impacted throughout the duration of the works, underscoring a collaborative approach to revitalising Birmingham’s vibrant heart.
