Birmingham City Centre Bus Lane Camera Change Spurs Surge in Driver Fines

Motorists navigating Birmingham city centre should be aware that bus lane enforcement has intensified, especially along the popular Broad Street nightlife district. Following a recent adjustment to the positioning of one of the bus lane cameras, fines for violations have dramatically increased.

The Birmingham City Council carried out a review after discovering that the previous camera location near Berkley Street — close to the Library of Birmingham end of Broad Street — was not effectively capturing all vehicles entering the bus and Metro-only lane. This gap allowed many drivers to avoid penalties despite breaking the rules.

Since relocating the camera to a more strategic point, the number of fines issued has soared. Data obtained by BirminghamLive reveals recorded offences jumped from just a few hundred each month to 5,508 in September and 3,557 in October alone.

Bus lane cameras were first activated along Broad Street at the end of 2024, and in the following year, nearly 25,000 motorists were fined for entering restricted bus and tram lanes. The penalty for driving in these lanes is £30, which doubles to £60 if unpaid within 14 days.

A spokesperson for Birmingham City Council clarified that the surge in recorded offences is due to the improved accuracy of the camera system following the technical adjustment. They stated: “The increase in bus lane enforcement at Broad Street (Berkley Street outbound) during September and October followed a scheduled review of the new camera system. As part of this review, the region of interest (ROI) on the camera was adjusted to ensure it was accurately capturing all vehicles contravening the restrictions in place. This technical adjustment resulted in a higher number of recorded offences, reflecting more accurate enforcement rather than a change in driver behaviour.”

Drivers are urged to stay vigilant and adhere to bus lane regulations to avoid fines, especially in the busy city centre areas where enforcement has become stricter.
