Birmingham City Bounce Back: Key Moments from 2-0 Win Over Wrexham

Chris Davies and the Birmingham City squad received a warm ovation after securing a 2-0 win over Wrexham at St Andrew’s on Sunday, a performance broadcast live on television.

This victory marks a crucial turnaround after a string of disappointing results—three consecutive defeats and six losses in their last eight outings. The Blues raised their level significantly to overcome playoff contenders Wrexham, with Carlos Vicente opening the scoring with a superb header before Christoph Klarer sealed the game with a close-range finish from a corner late in the second half.

Wrexham struggled to respond, dealing a blow to their top-six ambitions.

While a strong finish may not guarantee Chris Davies' future at the club, the team’s recent improvement has been well received by supporters—who remain influential in shaping the opinions of owners, Knighthead Capital Management.

Davies recognized the need to build on a spirited but ultimately unsuccessful performance against Ipswich. Sunday’s display was arguably one of Birmingham’s most complete this season. Following a disappointing loss to Blackburn Rovers ten days earlier, the team showed a noticeable shift in attitude, refusing to retreat hidden from their supporters after the final whistle.

Consistency is key, however. Another poor showing could see confidence drop again alongside the team’s league position, so maintaining this momentum is essential.

Carlos Vicente is beginning to justify the club’s substantial investment in his talents. Adjusting to the physical demands of English football has taken time for the Spaniard, who previously played in La Liga. Against Wrexham, his quality was evident—not only in his goal but in his intelligent runs behind the defense and a near-perfect cross that nearly found Ibrahim Osman.

If Vicente continues adapting, he could make an immediate impact next season after the current campaign concludes on May 2.

Kai Wagner’s performance resembled his impressive debut back in January against Coventry, arguably matching it. The German full-back provided an assist and created additional opportunities for teammates August Priske and Ibrahim Osman in the first half, while effectively curbing Wrexham’s attacking threat on his flank.

His presence brought better balance to the squad, potentially ending Birmingham’s long-standing struggles at left-back.

“Kai was excellent,” Davies noted. “His ability to open up the channel, deliver the ball to the winger, or cut inside provides great progression down the left side, especially with his left foot.”

In these closing games, Davies is also assessing squad players' futures—Bright Osayi-Samuel was given a chance against Wrexham despite a lackluster performance at Ipswich. Alongside Phil Neumann, both defenders showed their best form this season, contributing solidly on the right side. Whether they fit into the club’s future plans remains uncertain and likely to be decided during the summer.

Knighthead representatives were present in Birmingham for the fixture, a match that tends to draw interest from an American perspective. Although chairman Tom Wagner, a prominent figure in past encounters against Wrexham, was absent due to recovering from a stroke, Andrew Shannahan represented the owners and remains Davies’ point of contact in the US.

“Andrew’s the one I’m dealing with at the moment. I haven’t heard much about Tom, other than he’s OK and recovering,” Davies shared.

As the game progressed with Birmingham in control, supporters echoed chants for Wagner, highlighting his enduring connection with the club: ‘Tommy Wagner is a Blue, he hates Villa.’

It’s safe to say Wagner would have taken pride in the team’s spirited and stylish win on Sunday.
