Birmingham cinema experience marred by heat and poor audience behaviour at Star City

A Birmingham woman was left disappointed by a challenging cinema experience at Star City, citing poor audience behaviour and uncomfortable temperatures as key issues.

On Monday 3 August, 21-year-old Ankita Sagar visited the Vue Cinema with her parents to watch the latest Marvel release, Spider-Man: Brand New Day. It was their first visit to the cinema together since Ankita was a child.

Shortly into the film, the screening was paused due to confusion over assigned seating. Some patrons ended up sitting on the stairs, raising health and safety concerns, before the issue was resolved and the movie resumed.

However, Ankita said the greatest problem was the lack of adequate air conditioning, which left her family “dripping in sweat” and unable to fully enjoy the blockbuster.

“From the moment we entered the screen, there was an unpleasant smell that was really off-putting,” she told BirminghamLive. “It was so warm that I found myself smelling my popcorn to distract from the air. It was clear the air conditioning wasn’t working properly.”

She added that the audience was disruptive throughout the screening, with people arriving late, using their phones, and a mix of children and adults failing to show proper cinema etiquette.

“I was in disbelief at how chaotic it was,” Ankita said. “My dad even said this is exactly why he’d rather watch Netflix at home. But I do appreciate the cinema experience with the big screen and an audience.”

Ankita called for Vue Cinemas to address the ventilation system during hot weather, suggesting that screens might need to close during summer if conditions cannot be improved.

In response, a Vue spokesperson acknowledged the seating confusion and said the screening was paused for five minutes to resolve the issues, with no delays to other showings. However, they did not comment on complaints regarding air conditioning.

The incident highlights the importance of maintaining comfortable environments and good audience behaviour to preserve the cinema-going experience.
