As Birmingham’s German Christmas Market enters its final weekend, visitors are being advised to prepare for higher parking costs in the city centre. The AA has reported that charges at the Town Hall multi-storey car park have increased by 12% over the last year. This means a two-hour parking stay now costs £4.80—a rise of 50p—while a four-hour stay has gone up by 70p to £7.30, marking an 11% increase.
Through freedom of information requests, the AA examined parking price changes across 36 cities hosting major Christmas markets between 2024 and 2025. Their analysis found that parking charges can vary significantly, with some locations experiencing sharper increases than others. Where council-owned car park data was not available within a one-mile radius, private car park fees were considered instead.
Shaun Jones, the AA Patrol of the Year, emphasized the importance of checking parking tariffs ahead of visiting festive events. He said, “Christmas markets are a fantastic seasonal attraction, but parking costs differ widely depending on the city and car park. For short trips, it’s wise to check current fees in advance and explore public transport or park-and-ride options to avoid paying premium prices. Adjusting your parking location slightly can save you money and reduce stress during busy periods.”

Highlighting the nationwide trend, York’s Coppergate Centre Car Park topped the list with a 50% increase in two-hour parking fees—now £10.60—and a 29% rise for four-hour stays, which cost £17.50.
A spokesperson for Birmingham City Council explained, “Our parking tariffs in the city centre are regularly reviewed as part of a wider transport strategy aimed at reducing car trips and associated emissions, while encouraging the use of public transport.”
