Birmingham Chinese Takeaway Receives Zero Hygiene Rating Due to Language Barrier

A Chinese takeaway in Birmingham, Sea Garden located in Perry Barr, was awarded a zero hygiene rating after an inspection found several shortcomings. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) uses a scale where any rating below three is considered a failure, making Sea Garden’s rating the lowest possible.

The takeaway explained that the inspection took place at 4:30 pm, before the restaurant officially opened at 5 pm. At the time, the staff were still preparing the premises, and crucially, no English-speaking employees were present to communicate with the inspectors. This language barrier led to considerable misunderstandings during the visit and contributed significantly to the poor rating.

Sea Garden acknowledged the inspection’s findings and expressed its commitment to improving hygiene standards. The takeaway has since conducted a thorough deep clean, implemented enhanced cleaning schedules, and introduced rigorous monitoring procedures. Staff members have also received additional training on food safety, hygiene, and proper food handling.

Moreover, the management has reviewed and strengthened their food safety management system to ensure that all protocols are clearly documented and consistently followed. Regular compliance checks are now performed to maintain high hygiene standards.

The takeaway emphasized that the rating did not accurately reflect their usual service quality or customer experience. They have requested a follow-up inspection to validate the improvements made since the initial visit.

Sea Garden reiterated its dedication to maintaining a safe and hygienic environment for its customers and ensuring ongoing compliance with all food safety regulations.
