Alex Claridge, the acclaimed chef and owner of The Wilderness in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, has delivered a heartfelt message following his restaurant’s recent achievement of a Michelin Star. The Wilderness, known for its unique blend of modern British cuisine and ‘rock and roll fine dining,’ earned the coveted accolade nearly ten years after opening its doors in 2016.
Located on Warstone Lane, The Wilderness joins a prestigious group of Michelin-starred restaurants in Birmingham, including Adam’s, Simpsons, and Opheem – the city’s only two-star holder. This honor underscores the city’s growing reputation as a culinary destination.
Michelin praised both The Wilderness and Lichfield’s The Boat for their dedication, noting that their first stars reflect a decade of determination, hard work, and evolving confidence. The guide described The Wilderness as an “immersive dining experience,” where Claridge’s originality now shines alongside refined technique.

In a moving Instagram post following the announcement, The Wilderness shared a quote from author Charles Bukowski, whose words have adorned the restaurant’s walls for years: “If you’re going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don’t even start.” Claridge expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to this milestone, finishing with an affectionate nod to Birmingham: “Brum forever.”
This achievement is a testament not only to Claridge’s culinary talent but also to the power of persistence and passion in the pursuit of excellence.
