Adam Pickett, a renowned Birmingham chef with global experience and a history of cooking for football stars like Marc Albrighton and Jamie Vardy, is on a mission to empower young people in his community through cooking. Recognized as the Community Learning Champion at the West Midlands Combined Authority’s Adult Learner Awards 2026, Adam is dedicated to nurturing talent and confidence in youngsters facing challenges such as low self-esteem and bullying.
Adam operates Bluebell Wood in Chelmsley Wood, where he founded the Chelmsley Starters Culinary School in December 2025 with support from University College Birmingham (UCB). As the academic director of culinary operations at UCB, he leveraged funding and expertise to create a program that offers aspiring chefs training courses focused on mastering culinary arts and jumpstarting careers.
The school provides students with hands-on experience cooking and serving high-quality, affordable meals to the local community. Despite undergoing prostate cancer treatment, Adam continued to lead courses, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to the cause. Since its inception, nearly 40 learners have earned City & Guilds qualifications, with the number expected to double in the upcoming year.

Adam reflects on the transformative power of the program: “Many young people began this course lacking confidence and self-worth, some having suffered bullying. But through the opportunities we provide — including masterclasses with Michelin-starred chefs and academic support — they’ve discovered a passion for cooking right on their doorstep.”
Hailing from a single-parent family and overcoming similar obstacles himself, Adam credits his success to mentors at UCB who supported him after school. Now, he aspires to give back by helping local youth achieve their dream careers. Students not only gain qualifications but can earn while they learn, acquiring essential work experience.
West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker praised Adam’s impact: “Adam is an inspiration, bringing his passion and skills home to nurture the next generation. Programs like Chelmsley Starters are vital for enhancing job prospects and showcasing the regional talent.”
Adam’s love for cooking started as a boy, preparing meals with his grandad at their Great Barr allotment. That early passion led him to study at the Birmingham College of Food, Tourism and Creative Studies, now part of UCB, and ultimately to a successful culinary career he now shares with Birmingham’s youth.
