A Birmingham man who cares for his disabled wife has been fined after attempting to leave a Sainsbury’s supermarket with a trolley full of groceries without paying.
Fakhreddine Abderaouf, 41, placed items totalling £278.65 into a trolley at the Oldbury store before trying to exit through the self-checkout area. Store security staff detained him and contacted the police.
At Dudley Magistrates' Court, it was confirmed that the goods were recovered by the shop’s security team. Abderaouf, who lives on Salisbury Road, Birmingham, pleaded guilty to theft from a shop during the hearing on 20 August.

The court heard that Abderaouf receives Universal Credit and acts as the official carer for his wife, who has a physical disability.
He was fined £80, ordered to pay a £32 victim surcharge and £85 in court costs.
This case highlights the challenges faced by carers and the consequences of theft, even in difficult personal circumstances.
