Birmingham B&M Store Receives Zero Hygiene Rating, Listed Among UK’s Worst

A B&M store at The Fort shopping park near Erdington, Birmingham, has been handed a zero hygiene rating, signaling urgent need for improvement. The rating was awarded on October 27 following a thorough inspection by hygiene authorities.

In the UK, a hygiene score below three is considered a fail, with three indicating a generally satisfactory standard. This particular Birmingham store joins just two others nationwide—in Canterbury and Prescot—in receiving the lowest possible hygiene rating as of December 2.

Earlier this year, another B&M outlet in Birmingham also received a zero-hygiene rating, marking a concerning trend for the retailer’s local operations.

Inspectors base their evaluations on multiple factors, including food preparation, cooking, and storage practices, as well as the cleanliness and overall condition of the premises.

Responding to the rating, a B&M spokesperson said: “We have addressed the points raised and taken swift action to implement all necessary changes in this store. We apologize that our policies and strict store standards were not met on this occasion, and we are unhappy it occurred. Robust actions have been taken to overhaul standards and prevent such incidents in the future. The store has been operating as normal since October with all appropriate measures now in place.”
