A year ago, a vital text-based mental health support service was introduced to Birmingham and Solihull, offering a discreet and accessible lifeline for residents needing assistance with anxiety, stress, loneliness, depression and other mental health concerns.
Since its inception, thousands have utilised the free and confidential service by simply texting ‘Space’ to 85258, enabling them to receive help whenever and wherever they need it on their mobile phones.
The service was launched as an innovative alternative to early mental health support pathways, complementing existing resources such as NHS 111, Crisis Cafés and NHS Talking Therapies. It also plays an important role in alleviating pressure on crisis services and reducing waiting times for further support.

Louise*, aged 55, from Sutton Coldfield, describes the service as a lifeline. Living with post-traumatic stress disorder and treatment-resistant depression, she receives ongoing care from her Community Mental Health Team. However, in times outside appointments or regular hours, she relies on the text service, provided by Shout, for immediate support.
“Knowing I can chat to someone any time and anywhere is really helpful,” says Louise.
Louise explains that her ability to recognise early warning signs of her depression means she knows when to seek assistance to improve her wellbeing. “When I’ve had thoughts of harming myself and can’t reach my usual team, I contact the text service and can expect a response within minutes.”
She appreciates the service’s approachable and safe atmosphere, noting that communicating via text rather than voice makes it easier for her to open up about sensitive matters. “I’ve used it several times and have always felt better afterwards. The confidentiality helps me to speak freely.”
Despite the conversations being text-based, Louise feels a genuine human connection. “You know you’re speaking to a real person, and that reassurance is invaluable.”
For anyone living in Birmingham or Solihull experiencing low moods or mental health difficulties, the service remains available around the clock. Simply text the word ‘Space’ to 85258 to connect with a trained mental health professional whenever support is needed.
