Birmingham Airport is gearing up for its busiest summer yet, expecting over 2.5 million passengers to pass through its terminals. To help travelers navigate this peak period smoothly, the airport has shared key updates and practical advice.
Chris Wilson, Head of Terminal and Capacity Planning, highlighted some important changes: “Passengers should note that liquids up to 2 litres are now allowed in hand luggage when passing through security. This includes any number of containers. Additionally, all electrical devices such as laptops, phones, tablets, and their lithium batteries must remain in hand luggage during screening.”
Families will also benefit from new rules at border control. Children aged eight and over who meet the height requirement of 120cm and hold an eligible biometric passport can now use the UK eGates when accompanied by an adult. This change aims to make border crossings quicker and more convenient for families traveling together.

- Liquid restrictions now allow containers up to 2 litres in hand luggage, but always double-check if all airports on your route accept this limit.
- Electronic devices must stay in hand luggage and be ready for screening.
- Aluminium or metal bottles and flasks should be emptied before security; free refill stations are available inside the terminal.
- Remove all items from pockets (phones, keys, coins, earphones, tissues) when going through security; watches can remain on, but belts and shoes may need to be removed if requested.
- Inform security officers of any medical devices or implants before entering the scanner.
- Vapes, e-cigarettes, and devices with lithium-ion batteries should never be packed in checked baggage. Confirm with your airline if these can be carried in cabin baggage.
- Check your airline’s specific check-in times to avoid delays.
- Eligible passengers flying with easyJet, Ryanair, Jet2, or TUI can take advantage of the twilight bag drop service the day before departure for qualifying flights.
- Always keep personal belongings and luggage with you while in the airport.
For families traveling with children, remember that under-18s using eGates must be accompanied by an adult. Eligible biometric passports accepted at eGates include those from the UK, EU, EEA, Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, and the USA.
