Birmingham Airport Unveils Ambitious Sustainability Strategy to Achieve Net Zero by 2033

Birmingham Airport has launched its new Sustainability Strategy for 2026 to 2030, setting a clear roadmap to accelerate its commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. Building on significant achievements, including a 30% reduction in direct emissions since 2019, the airport aims to become net zero by 2033.

The strategy emphasizes three core pillars: supporting local communities, reducing environmental impact, and improving energy efficiency. Alongside ongoing efforts to manage noise pollution, decrease waste, and conserve water, the airport is expanding its focus to address indirect emissions by collaborating closely with partners and stakeholders.

To ensure alignment with its sustainability goals, Birmingham Airport will implement a new sustainable procurement policy, requiring suppliers and contractors to undergo rigorous due diligence and contract management processes. Additionally, specialized training and engagement programs will promote sustainable business practices throughout the airport community.

Enhancing the quality of life for local residents remains a priority. The airport continues its partnership with a local corporate charity, while introducing skills-based work experience initiatives and volunteering opportunities for staff. The Community Trust Fund, which has awarded over £2 million to impactful causes, will be fully digitalized to increase accessibility and encourage applications.

Biodiversity protection is another vital focus. As a designated Local Wildlife Site, the airport commits to responsible land management practices, ensuring wildlife conservation and integrating biodiversity considerations into all new development projects.

Simon Richards, Chief Finance and Sustainability Officer, commented on the strategy’s launch: “We’re proud to unveil our new Sustainability Strategy for 2026 to 2030 as a testament to our dedication to environmental stewardship and community partnership. This plan is essential for staying on course to meet our net zero target by 2033, while continuing to grow responsibly. We look forward to implementing these initiatives and sharing the benefits they bring.”

This strategy update comes as Birmingham Airport prepares for its upcoming Masterplan consultation for responsible development through 2041, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable growth.
