On Tuesday, April 14, seven flights from Birmingham Airport have been cancelled due to continued strikes by Lufthansa pilots. The action comes as the German airline faces a union dispute over pension reforms, significantly impacting travelers across Europe.
The Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) union initiated the strike after unsuccessful negotiations with Lufthansa regarding pension agreements. Andreas Pinheiro, president of VC, expressed frustration with the airline’s stance, stating, “The Cockpit union feels compelled to take this step after the employer’s side showed no real willingness to reach a solution in several collective bargaining disputes.”
Despite avoiding strikes over the Easter holidays, the union criticized Lufthansa for lacking serious proposals. In response, Lufthansa described the union’s demands as “absurd and unachievable” and labeled the strike announcement as an escalation.

Affected flights departing from Birmingham Airport include connections to Frankfurt and Munich. Lufthansa and affiliated carriers like Eurowings are working diligently to minimize disruption by rerouting passengers via other airlines within the Lufthansa Group or through partners. However, not all cancellations can be avoided.
Passengers are advised to verify their flight status before traveling and to check communications from the airline, especially if contact details are registered with their booking. Lufthansa apologized for the inconvenience caused by the unexpected strike action and remains committed to resolving the situation as swiftly as possible.
