A Bilston man who is a benefits claimant was caught stealing meat, fish and cheese from the Co-op store in Woodsetton, reportedly because he was short of cash.
Jason Trubshaw took goods worth £50 from the supermarket on Sedgley Road on 30 May. The 31-year-old, who lives on Clarence Road in Bilston, was identified through CCTV footage.
At Dudley Magistrates' Court on 20 August, Trubshaw admitted to the theft offence. He was also sentenced for breaching a community order during the same hearing.

In his defence, it was explained that Trubshaw was relying on benefits and was experiencing financial difficulties at the time of the theft. His solicitor stated, “He intended to sell the items to assist his own finances.”
Regarding the breach of the community order, this was related to a missed appointment and failure to seek approval for a house move. His solicitor noted, however, that securing independent accommodation was a significant accomplishment for Trubshaw.
Magistrates expressed disappointment that Trubshaw committed an offence while under a community order. He was fined £100 for the breach and ordered to pay £50 compensation to the Co-op, in addition to £85 in court costs.
