Aston Villa kicked off their 2026/27 pre-season campaign in emphatic fashion, cruising to a 5-0 victory over Walsall at the Bescot Stadium.
The standout performer was striker Brian Madjo, who netted a first-half brace, scoring either side of George Hemmings' consolation for Walsall. Villa’s youngsters Luka Lynch and Aidan Borland then contributed the fourth and fifth goals, rounding off a comprehensive win.
Manager Unai Emery’s side now travel to FC Porto before returning to Walsall next Tuesday to face Real Sociedad in another pre-season test.

Madjo’s performance was arguably the highlight of the evening. In just 45 minutes on the pitch, the 17-year-old showcased a rare blend of physical strength and clinical finishing. His opener saw him hold off a defender with brute power before calmly finishing from Kosta Nedeljkovic’s precise cross. His second goal, struck just before halftime, further demonstrated his poise in front of goal.
Despite his impressive display, Madjo remains unregistered as a Villa player by FIFA due to age restrictions, a decision the club is challenging at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The teenager’s potential to thrive in the Premier League is unmistakable, and fans will be eager to see him feature more prominently once eligible.
Another positive was the debut of Joao Gomes, Villa’s £35 million signing from Wolves. The Brazilian midfielder appeared relaxed and confident in his first appearance, partnering well with Borland in the double pivot. His composed possession and work rate suggested he has much to offer as the team builds towards the new season.
Villa are on the verge of finalizing a loan deal for Chelsea forward Alejandro Garnacho, who is expected to provide fresh attacking options following Morgan Rogers’ £117 million move to Chelsea. Emery is still looking to bolster his forward line, with targets including Ibrahim Mbaye and Nicolas Jackson.
Winger Alysson, who joined Villa in January, remains on the cusp of the first team. His strong showing against Walsall could enhance his chances of staying in the squad, although a loan move may still be the best path for his development.
In addition to attacking reinforcements, Villa have versatile midfielders like Johan Manzambi and John McGinn, who can step into the double pivot if needed due to injury or suspension.
