‘Because of rising food prices, many are struggling in Birmingham’

Food bank volunteer Andrew Kitchen has spoken out about the growing number of people in Birmingham who are facing hardship due to rising living costs.

The city includes the Ladywood constituency, which last year recorded the highest levels of child poverty in the country at 62 per cent. This alarming statistic highlights the ongoing challenges faced by many families in the area.

The cost-of-living crisis continues to affect thousands across Birmingham on a daily basis. Volunteers at Narthex, one of the city’s largest food banks based in Tyseley, are committed to offering vital support to those in need.

Andrew Kitchen, 57, from Birmingham, dedicates his time to creating a welcoming and safe environment for individuals and families seeking help. Narthex provides not only food bank services but also money and debt advice, guidance, and community engagement.

“There shouldn’t be a need for food banks,” Andrew shared, expressing his concerns over the current situation. “With the price of food and everything else increasing, that’s why more people are struggling.”

Reflecting on his seven years volunteering, Andrew has observed a steady rise in demand for assistance. “I think it’s getting worse. Because of the price of food and other essentials, many people are really struggling out there. I feel sorry for them, but unfortunately, that’s the reality at the moment.”

Kate Coulson, another volunteer at the Tyseley branch who manages the packing side of operations, also sees a continued need for support in Birmingham. She emphasised how Narthex’s efforts help those affected to regain stability.

“It’s heartbreaking to think of people without food for themselves or their families,” Kate said. “Sometimes, individuals come in who are extremely hungry. It makes you wonder where they’ve been and why no one has helped them sooner.”

Narthex operates five food bank locations across Birmingham, including Balsall Heath, Tyseley, Sparkhill, Stechford, and Hall Green. Opening hours vary by location.

Those seeking assistance or advice can contact Narthex on 0121 227 0103. Staff are available to conduct eligibility assessments for food bank vouchers and provide further support.
