Beating Liverpool Is a Fantastic Memory, But Now I Want to Make History with Aston Villa

Unai Emery’s triumphant return to St. Jakob-Park on Thursday night will revive memories of his memorable 2016 Europa League victory over Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool. However, the Aston Villa manager insists his focus is on creating fresh history with his current team.

With four Europa League titles under his belt—three with Sevilla—Emery’s Aston Villa are among the early favorites to claim this year’s competition. They aim to secure a fifth win in six group stage matches, potentially propelling them into the top two of their group standings.

“This competition holds a special place in my heart,” Emery said. “Europe has given me so much—trophies and invaluable experience. Each European season brings fantastic memories, whether it’s the Conference League, Champions League, or Europa League.”

Reflecting on his past success, Emery recounted: “Winning the Europa League three times, including here against Liverpool, was a fantastic experience. It’s a great moment to remember—but in football, I want to build new moments and start a new era. At Aston Villa, I’m thrilled to be competing in Europe: from the Conference League two years ago, to the Champions League last season, and now the Europa League.”

He emphasized the significance of European competition for the club and its players: “It’s crucial for Aston Villa’s development, for our players, and for me as a coach. I’m deeply motivated. While I can reminisce about that historic moment here, we always treat each competition with focus and respect, understanding what it means for everyone involved.”
