BBC TV Licences Reduced to £0 for Eligible State Pensioners Born Before 1951

State pensioners born before 1951 may qualify for a free BBC TV Licence under current TV licensing rules. If you are 75 or older and either you or your partner receiving Pension Credit lives at the same address as the licence holder, you can apply for a TV Licence at no cost.

BBC TV Licensing explains, “As part of your application, we will verify with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) that you are receiving Pension Credit. Please ensure the name on your TV Licence matches the name registered with the DWP.”

Even if you don’t currently have a TV Licence or cannot sign in online, you can still apply for your free licence through the online application process. If you are already in receipt of Pension Credit, you can apply for your free licence starting from age 74. The licence payments will be updated to cover until your 75th birthday, after which your free licence will take effect. Confirmation will be sent in writing.

Additionally, individuals who are severely sight impaired (blind) and can provide valid evidence are eligible for a 50% concession on the TV Licence. Once accepted, they can then apply for a free TV Licence.

If you do not currently receive Pension Credit but believe you may be eligible, it’s worthwhile to apply. Pension Credit can provide a boost to your retirement income—even if you have a pension, savings, or own your home—with the average weekly benefit exceeding £83. Beyond a free TV Licence, Pension Credit can also help with housing costs, heating bills, Council Tax, NHS dental care, and more.

TV Licensing advises, “Checking your eligibility for Pension Credit is straightforward. You can contact the Department for Work and Pensions at 0800 99 1234 (available 8:00am to 6:00pm) or visit gov.uk/pension-credit.

For Northern Ireland residents, please call the Northern Ireland Pension Centre at 0808 100 6165 or visit nidirect.gov.uk/pension-credit.

Please note that TV Licensing cannot provide advice regarding Pension Credit eligibility.”
