BBC Pulls Silent Witness Episode at Last Minute Following Birmingham Incident

Fans of the long-running BBC drama Silent Witness were caught off guard on Monday night when the scheduled episode did not air as planned. The show, which returned for a new series recently and is now set in Birmingham, had built anticipation around its gripping storylines featuring forensic experts Nikki Alexander (Emilia Fox) and Jack Hodgson (David Caves).

The next two-part story, titled The Enemy Within, centers on a fatal stabbing with suspected racial motives, set against rising tensions across the city. However, when viewers tuned in on February 9, they encountered a completely different episode than the one listed.

Social media was quick to respond with confusion and curiosity. One viewer asked on X: “Did they just say they have changed the schedule/episode of Silent Witness?? Why??” Others wondered about the episode order changes and expressed frustration at the unexpected switch.

Silent Witness’s official Instagram account confirmed the abrupt change shortly before the broadcast, announcing that the new episode was now available on BBC iPlayer, replacing the previously advertised content.

The decision to reshuffle episodes was prompted by a tragic event in Birmingham over the weekend. On Saturday night, two teenagers, aged 14 and 15, were attacked with a machete outside a shop. One suffered life-altering injuries, while another 15-year-old was punched. West Midlands Police have since arrested a 12-year-old boy on suspicion of attempted murder, describing it as a targeted assault.

A BBC spokesperson told TV Guide: “Due to the attack in Birmingham over the weekend, this week’s episodes of Silent Witness will not transmit as planned and instead they have been replaced with two episodes from later on in the series.”

Instead of The Enemy Within, viewers were shown the first parts of episodes five and six, titled Creekwood. This storyline follows Nikki and Jack to a construction site where they investigate the death of an elderly man with a screwdriver impaled through his eye socket. The case leads the team into the complexities of the mental health system, guided by investigating officer DI Ashley Moss.

Silent Witness continues to air on BBC One at 9 PM on Mondays and Tuesdays, but viewers should be aware that the schedule may remain subject to changes influenced by real-world events.
