BBC Presenter Nick Owen Shares Relief After Successful Kidney Cancer Surgery Following Second Diagnosis

BBC Midlands Today presenter Nick Owen has opened up about his recent surgery to treat kidney cancer, marking his second major cancer battle in a little over two years.

In 2023, Nick was diagnosed with prostate cancer but made a full recovery and soon returned to his broadcasting duties. He emphasizes that his kidney cancer diagnosis is unrelated to his previous illness.

Now 78, Nick is recovering at home after the surgery, which took place just before Christmas. He expressed deep relief and gratitude: “I am so relieved to have come through the operation after a traumatic time, especially after what my wife Vicki and our family went through when I had prostate cancer.”

He also praised the NHS for their exceptional care, from the thoroughness of his GP in diagnosing the cancer to the skilled medical team at Russells Hall Hospital. “I am forever grateful,” Nick said.

Nick has been a familiar face on British television for over half a century. He played a pivotal role in breakfast television’s early days, appearing on the very first Good Morning Britain in 1983, later co-hosting with Anne Diamond on ITV, and then on BBC One’s Good Morning with Anne and Nick. His broadcasting career includes covering major events like the Olympics and World Cup.

His openness about his prostate cancer diagnosis significantly raised awareness and encouraged many men to seek testing. Viewers reached out to thank him for inspiring them to get checked, with some even crediting him for saving their lives.

In recognition of his contributions to broadcasting, Nick was awarded an MBE in 2024.

Kay Wright, head of the BBC in the Midlands, spoke warmly about Nick’s spirit: “We are so proud of Nick. He is an outstanding broadcaster with a heart of gold. His BBC colleagues and his devoted Midlands Today viewers have missed him dearly over recent weeks. We are wishing him all the best in his recovery. The red sofa will be here waiting for him when he’s ready.”
