Bar Mystery Solved as Birmingham Pub Legends Launch ‘Cloak and Dagger’

When the Wildcat Tap closed its doors on Stirchley’s Pershore Road in July 2025, the local community was left wondering who would step into one of Birmingham’s most iconic and missed bar spaces.

Pershore Road has earned a reputation as one of the city’s best hubs for independent businesses, often dubbed the ‘Independent Republic’ of Birmingham. Among the key players helping to shape this vibrant scene is Cork and Cage—an employee-owned bar just a few doors down. Known for world-class drinks paired with a simple yet acclaimed food menu, Cork and Cage has become a firm favourite among locals and food lovers alike.

Now, the mystery has been unveiled: Richardson, Nick, Seb, and Nathan, the owners of Cork and Cage, have signed a seven-year lease on the former Wildcat Tap premises. “The Wildcat meant too much to lose,” they explained, prompting them to carry forward the spirit of the former pub with a new venture aptly named The Cloak and Dagger.

Paying tribute to Liam Scallon, who managed the Wildcat Tap for nine years before its closing, the team said: “Liam created a much-loved community hub with some of the best-kept cask ales around. We’re honoured to carry the torch and blend The Wildcat’s spirit with Cork and Cage’s values—staff wellbeing, work-life balance, employee ownership, and fair pricing for all.”

Fans of Cork and Cage will be pleased to know that classic Black Country-style cobs will feature on the menu, keeping a local tradition alive. The bar is also known for its innovative “cob weeks” and kitchen takeovers. For example, Jonny Mills’ acclaimed restaurant Sael will run a pop-up kitchen there from January 27 to 29.

Importantly, Cork and Cage’s original location will continue to operate as usual, with both bars complementing each other in serving the Stirchley community.

The announcement has been met with enthusiasm across social media. Local businesses and community groups have expressed their support, and Councillor Mary Locke chimed in with a message of congratulations.

Hints at festive decorations on the Wildcat Tap windows over Christmas had already sparked curiosity, but with this official reveal, the wait is finally over. The Cloak and Dagger’s opening date will be announced soon, promising another cherished gathering spot for Stirchley residents.
