Aston Villa’s Comeback Hero Alan Hutton Backs Harvey Elliott’s Move to Spain

Alan Hutton, former Aston Villa defender renowned for his resilience, has expressed support for Harvey Elliott’s decision to revive his footballing career in Spain, drawing from his own similar experience.

Elliott faced a challenging season on loan at Aston Villa, where the specific terms of his Liverpool loan reportedly made manager Unai Emery cautious about frequently including him, to avoid triggering a mandatory purchase clause. Consequently, the England Under-21 player featured in only nine games throughout the campaign.

Following his return to Liverpool during the off-season, Elliott secured a loan move to Valencia on transfer deadline day, aiming to rebuild his form and confidence.

Hutton, who endured his own difficult spells at Villa during Paul Lambert’s tenure-often finding himself loaned out-highlighted the benefits of his 2013 loan to Mallorca. He explained how the move offered both more playing time and a fresh perspective.

“I went through a tough period at Villa over several seasons and then went on loan to Spain, where it felt as though I could forget about everything that had come before,” Hutton told FootballPredictions.com. “I really enjoyed playing football there. The style is more technical, very different from the Premier League, and less physical."

He believes the Spanish game suits Elliott’s style well, noting: “Harvey wants to get on the ball, find space, create chances and score goals. The key for him is to play regularly and regain his confidence."

Hutton added, “Everyone knows he is talented, but he’s had a hard few seasons. Learning the language and embracing the culture can help him change his mindset completely, perhaps paving the way for a successful return to English football."

Reflecting on his own journey, Hutton revealed that his spell in Spain opened doors to further opportunities, and suggested Elliott is at a pivotal moment in his career.

“He needs to find a place where he feels valued and can play consistently. Given his style, Spain is a good fit, and I believe he will thrive there,” he said.

So far, Elliott has made three appearances for Valencia, including a notable debut against Barcelona in early September. Prior to his loans, he accumulated 149 appearances for Liverpool.

Hutton returned to Aston Villa in 2014 and successfully re-established himself in the first team, making 168 additional appearances before retiring from professional football.
