Former Aston Villa striker Emile Heskey has called on the club to resist any temptation to sell Morgan Rogers during this summer’s transfer window. At just 23 years old, Rogers has become one of the Premier League’s most coveted talents, attracting interest from top clubs including Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and Paris Saint-Germain.
Though Aston Villa isn’t under immediate pressure to offload Rogers, a lucrative transfer fee would undoubtedly provide manager Unai Emery with valuable funds to bolster weaker areas within the squad. With an ageing team and few saleable assets, Villa faces a challenging balancing act as they look to rebuild.
Villa’s recent success, including winning the Europa League and securing a fourth-place Premier League finish last season, has granted them Champions League revenue once again. Despite these financial boosts, the club continues to navigate restrictions imposed by the Squad Cost Rules (SCR), which limit their spending power.

Heskey, reflecting on Villa’s historical struggles to maintain their top talent, highlights the importance of retaining key players like Rogers. “He’s definitely ready for that step up. Villa’s in a difficult position where they have to sell players on to balance the books,” Heskey told Standard Sport. “But look, I think for Villa, they’ve got to try and keep players like that. You can’t keep selling.”
Drawing on his own experience, Heskey recalled the departures of influential players such as Ashley Young, Gareth Barry, James Milner, and Stewart Downing, all of whom left Villa during his time. “They are really trying to build on top of that and have a go. So it’s tough for them,” he added.
Despite having five years left on his contract, Morgan Rogers remains a target for several elite European clubs. Villa’s response to the transfer interest will play a critical role in shaping the club’s future ambitions and stability amid financial constraints.
