Aston Villa Submit £18m Bid for Taylor Harwood-Bellis as Potential Ezri Konsa Replacement

Aston Villa have reportedly tabled an £18 million bid to sign Southampton defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis, according to The Athletic. This move comes as first-team regular Ezri Konsa edges closer to a transfer to Premier League champions Arsenal, prompting Unai Emery’s side to seek defensive reinforcements.

The 24-year-old Harwood-Bellis is one of three defensive targets Villa are considering as a potential replacement for Konsa. However, Villa face competition for the Southampton captain’s signature, with Benfica having recently had a £17 million offer rejected.

Currently playing in the Championship following Southampton’s expulsion from the playoffs due to their involvement in the Spygate scandal, Harwood-Bellis completed a permanent transfer to St Mary’s in 2024 for approximately £20 million after initially joining the club in 2023.

The former Manchester City academy graduate boasts considerable experience, having made 155 Championship appearances during loan spells with Blackburn, Stoke City, Burnley, and Southampton. Notably, he was part of the team that won promotion to the Premier League in 2024, going on to make 34 appearances in Southampton’s challenging top-flight season.

Harwood-Bellis has two years remaining on his contract, and according to a report from the Daily Echo, Southampton would find it difficult to refuse a substantial offer that meets their valuation.

Southampton head coach Tony Pulis recently addressed speculation surrounding the defender. As quoted by the Daily Echo, he said: “I think with the performance of some of the players last year, it is natural there is interest from other clubs. It’s not just Taylor but other players too. He showed his dedication on the pitch today to this team and project, and we will see what the market brings in the next two weeks.”

Meanwhile, Ezri Konsa has taken significant steps towards a move to Arsenal. Mikel Arteta has highlighted the England international as a crucial addition to his Premier League-winning squad. Aston Villa are reported to have agreed a £51 million deal with Arsenal for the 28-year-old, who has since said farewell to his teammates and is scheduled to undergo a medical on Thursday, 20 August.
