Aston Villa have warmly congratulated Morgan Rogers following his record-breaking £117 million transfer to Premier League rivals Chelsea. The 23-year-old midfielder now holds the distinction of being the most expensive British player in history, surpassing Elliot Anderson’s recent move to Manchester City.
Villa acknowledged Rogers’ rapid rise and significant contributions since joining from Middlesbrough in February 2024. He quickly became a key player, helping the team secure the UEFA Europa League title last season, notably scoring the third goal in the 3-0 victory against SC Freiburg in the final held in Istanbul.
Throughout his time at Villa, Rogers also earned his first senior England caps, representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup where the Three Lions achieved a third-place finish. Aston Villa hailed Rogers not only for his talent but also for his impeccable character and dedication, stating he will remain a cherished part of the club’s recent historic moments.

Chelsea successfully met Villa’s valuation last week despite strong interest from Arsenal. Rogers initially joined Villa for an £8 million fee, potentially rising to £15 million, and made 125 appearances under manager Unai Emery. Last season, he scored 14 goals and provided 11 assists in 55 appearances across all competitions.
Aston Villa have also been active in the transfer market, securing Johan Manzambi for a club-record £52 million and Joao Gomes from Wolves for £35 million. Meanwhile, key departures include Youri Tielemans leaving for Manchester United and Lucas Digne transferring to Paris Saint-Germain.
