Argos Launches New Online Marketplace to Compete with Amazon, eBay, and Etsy

Argos is set to transform the way customers shop online by launching a new marketplace within the next year, aiming to compete directly with giants like Amazon, eBay, and Etsy. The retailer, known for its catalogue shopping and with stores in Birmingham, is introducing this major update to offer customers a broader range of products and a more convenient shopping experience.

The upcoming marketplace will enable third-party sellers to list and sell their products directly on Argos' platform, significantly expanding the variety available to shoppers. This initiative is part of Argos' wider strategy to enhance customer choice and deliver greater shopping confidence.

Graham Biggart, Director at Argos, commented, “Introducing a marketplace within the next year marks an exciting next step in Argos’ multiyear transformation. It reflects what we know customers want – more choice, more convenience, and more reasons to shop with confidence. With over one billion visits to our website each year and a brand built on value, trust, and quality, we see a real opportunity to offer an even wider range of products that complement our core ranges and the highly valued suppliers we work with today.”

The move follows recent sales figures from Sainsbury’s, Argos’ parent company, showing a 5.1% rise in grocery sales during the holiday season, driven by demand for its premium own-brand range, Taste the Difference. However, the non-food sector, which includes Argos, experienced a 2.2% sales decline during the same period.

Sainsbury’s CEO Simon Roberts acknowledged the competitive market conditions: “We expected the market to become more competitive with customers spending more carefully and we invested in balanced choices to offer great value for money, outstanding quality and innovation, and leading customer service and availability, both in store and online.”

Despite recent challenges, Argos’ launch of a third-party marketplace represents a strategic effort to adapt and thrive in the evolving retail landscape by providing shoppers with more options and flexibility.
