Andy Burnham Supports New Rent Control Measures for England’s Renters and Landlords

Andy Burnham, the new Labour Party leader, has indicated that rent controls are under serious consideration as a means to ease financial pressures facing renters in England. Speaking shortly after becoming Prime Minister, Burnham pledged to provide “breathing space” for those struggling with rising living costs.

In his first major speech as Prime Minister, Burnham outlined his intention to implement significant reforms aimed at reversing decades of economic decline and political centralization. “We will make this moment a circuit breaker for Britain,” he declared, promising a shift towards a more collaborative and inclusive political and economic model.

When asked about the government’s priorities, Burnham confirmed that measures addressing bus fares, energy bills, and potentially rent freezes were all on the table. “We’re looking at all of those things,” he said. While specifics are still being finalized, Burnham emphasized the urgency of delivering tangible relief. “We just want to do some things that people will feel and feel quite quickly,” he explained.

The proposed rent freeze would aim to provide immediate relief for renters strained by soaring private sector rents, forming part of a fully funded cost of living support package. Burnham acknowledged the measures won’t solve all the problems but insisted they demonstrate a clear commitment to helping people cope during challenging times.

Looking ahead, the government plans to announce more details soon, with a focus on reversing trends that have left many communities feeling left behind since the 1980s. By decentralizing political power and fostering local problem-solving, Burnham hopes to empower communities across England to build a fairer and more resilient economy.
