Andy Burnham Birmingham poll sends clear message on snap election

A significant 77 per cent of BirminghamLive readers have expressed their support for Andy Burnham to call an early general election. Out of nearly 9,000 votes cast, the overwhelming majority favoured a snap election soon after Burnham’s rise to Labour leader.

In contrast, 19 per cent of readers opposed the idea of a snap election, while four per cent remained unsure whether such a move was necessary.

Burnham assumed leadership of the Labour Party last month, following Sir Keir Starmer’s departure from 10 Downing Street. This leadership change has stirred comparisons with Gordon Brown’s succession to Prime Minister in 2007, when he took over from Tony Blair without triggering a general election.

In an interview with the Manchester Evening News, Burnham firmly declined the prospect of calling a snap election. The former Mayor of Manchester stated: “No, I’m not. I don’t think that is right. We live in a parliamentary democracy. There was a manifesto in 2024. I’m sticking to that manifesto.”

He added, “I’m bringing forward my version but it is still within that manifesto. I just think that we need to focus on making the country work. That is the biggest priority right now. A general election would postpone that essential work. I’m also trying to do politics differently, as I did when I was mayor of Greater Manchester.”

Additionally, over 8,300 BirminghamLive readers participated in a poll regarding Burnham’s potential performance as Prime Minister. Fifty-seven per cent expressed doubt about his capability, while 14 per cent believed he would do a good job. Nearly 30 per cent felt it was too early to make a judgement.

The debate over a snap election continues to engage the public. Readers are invited to share their views on whether one should be called in the comments section below.
