Andy Burnham, the new Labour Party Prime Minister, has unveiled a significant new policy to support pubs, clubs, and live music venues across England. Starting April next year, these establishments will benefit from a 20% reduction in their business rates bills, delivering an average saving of around £1,100 per pub.
This bold move aims to protect and revive the cherished venues that form the backbone of local communities and high streets. In addition to this rates cut, measures will be introduced to review reliefs granted to anti-social businesses, including vape shops, to further support community-friendly enterprises.
Nearly 32,000 pubs, clubs, and live music venues are set to benefit from this relief, helping to ease financial pressures and encourage growth. This initiative is part of a broader government effort to reduce living costs and support working people, including VAT relief on electricity bills and capping bus fares at £2.

Prime Minister Burnham emphasized the importance of these venues, stating, “For too long, governments have stood by while cherished venues have disappeared from our local high streets. So today I am changing that. This government will back the businesses that people want to see in their communities. Pubs and local high streets are the beating heart of our communities – and that’s what we will do.”
Chancellor of the Exchequer John Healey added, “Pubs, clubs, and live music venues bring people together, support local jobs, and keep high streets vibrant. We are determined to bring hope back, give businesses the support they need, and generate growth nationwide. This is just one step in our commitment to reform the wider business rates system, including Small Business Rates Relief, which we will address further at the Budget.”
