Andy Burnham Affirms Commitment to State Pension Triple Lock if Elected Prime Minister

Andy Burnham has reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining the state pension triple lock if he becomes Prime Minister, firmly ruling out any plans to abolish it during the current Parliament. The triple lock guarantees that pensions rise each year by the highest of three measures: 2.5%, inflation, or average wage growth.

Burnham emphasized that reversing Labour’s manifesto promise to uphold the triple lock would be “very damaging.” His stance aligns with expert opinion from Nicholas Barr, a public economics professor at the London School of Economics, who supports continuing the policy as it promotes investment in human capital rather than simply increasing benefits.

Alex Clegg, an economist at the Resolution Foundation, welcomed the ongoing debate about the future of the triple lock, suggesting it is important to address the issue openly before the next election and during party manifesto preparations.

Wes Streeting, another senior Labour figure and perceived rival to Burnham, also confirmed his support for preserving the triple lock throughout this Parliament. Speaking after unveiling his economic proposals for a potential Labour leadership campaign, Streeting stressed the need for the government to tackle “intergenerational fairness” seriously.

He highlighted concerns among older people about future care provisions and noted the troubling prospect that the upcoming generation may fare worse economically than previous ones—a first in the nation’s history. Streeting called for policies that engage people constructively rather than imposing solutions upon them.

“We need to be confident as politicians in treating the public with respect, sharing these challenges openly, and securing democratic consent,” Streeting said. “Our priorities must balance security and opportunity, from early childhood to later life, ensuring dignity and confidence for all generations.”
