Amazon is preparing to introduce a Ring ‘Neighbourhood Watch’ app in the UK, responding to concerns over privacy and the effectiveness of existing communication channels. The new platform is designed to replace WhatsApp or Facebook groups by providing a dedicated space where people can share information about community safety, lost pets, and other local concerns.
Set to be available free of charge within the existing Ring app for UK users from 21 October, the service is accessible to anyone-whether or not they own Ring devices.
Dave Ward, Ring’s managing director of international operations, highlighted the loss of the traditional village noticeboard as communities have evolved, noting the need for renewed local connection. Users will be able to establish their own neighbourhood by selecting a radius around their home, with options extending up to five miles. Notification settings can be customised to prevent irrelevant updates from overwhelming users.
The UK will be the first country outside the United States to receive the Neighbours feature. Existing Ring customers will find the service integrated within the Ring app, while new users can download the app and input their address to create their neighbourhood group.
Ward acknowledged the shortcomings of current social platforms, which often flood users with a wide range of messages-from safety alerts to mundane updates like bin collection days-resulting in large groups that users tend to mute.
“We’re focusing on distilling communication to matters that directly impact your immediate community, making the platform genuinely useful,” he said.
To maintain the quality of posts, Ring plans to guide users in composing appropriate, relevant content. This includes prompting users to consider the necessity and tone of their posts, thereby reducing unwanted or off-topic material and fostering a stronger sense of community. Ward emphasised that this approach differs markedly from the often disorderly nature of other group chats such as WhatsApp.
